Banke Bihari Temple of Vrindavan

The Banke Bihari Temple is a very famous Hindu temple located in Vrindavan of Mathura district in India. This holy temple in dedicated to Lord Krishna who is seen standing in the Tribhanga (bent in three places) posture. The deity named Banke Bihari because of its posture. Here Banke means “bent in three places” and Bihari means “supreme enjoyer. “This temple is famous and renowned for the floral decorations that adorn the deity.

The deity Banke Bihari Temple was initially worshipped in Nidhivan till 1863 but the deity is supposed to be much older than that. The deity of Banke Bihari is said to have been found by the the great Krishna devotee and musician-saint Svami Hari Das at kadamba grove in Nidhivan. Swami Haridas worshiped and looked after deity as a child. Swami Hari Das known for his bhajans was the guru of the Indian famous musician Tansen.

The present Banke Bihari Temple was built in 1864 by Saint Hari das with the contribution of Goswamis. After construction the deity of Banke Bihari was transferred to this temple. Banke Bihari is believed to be late riser and wake up only after 9am. That’s why there are no bells or conch in the temple because Banke Bihari does not like the sound of bells or conch. There is only chant of ‘Radha naam’ and the mangal aarti is sung only on the day of Janmashtami. Whereas only once in a year on the day of “Akshyaya Tritiya” Lotus feet of the Deity can be seen.

This temple has an exceptional and unique style of celebrating every festival. The deity is dressed up and offered cuisine (prasad) according to season where as the Temple is decorated with lights and varieties of flower according to festival. The temple is very popular for Jhoolan (swing festival) and Janmashthami celebrations. Many devotees come every day to seek his divine blessings especially in the month of Sravana, during Jhoolan Yatra.
