Krishna and boat trips

Lord Krishna and his beloved Radhaji were fond of boating. It is been said that during summer season, Lord Krishna along with Radhaji and other gopies used to enjoy sailing through Yamuna River. They would sing songs lingered with love, enjoy the cool breeze and seek pleasure.

Krishna killing Aghasura the snake demon

Aghasura was the younger brother of Putana and Bakasura, who were killed by Krishna. So Aghasura decided to take revenge for his sibling death and accepted the proposal of King Kansa to kill Krishna.

Aghasura was a demon so he easily assumed the form of giant serpent and appeared before Krishna and his cowherd friends. The Aghasura expanded his body up to 8 miles in length with his jaw widely open stretching like a mountain cave. Aghasura lay on the path where Krishna and Balarama with his friends were playing. Cowherd’s friends with their cattle entered in the mouth of Aghasura mistaking it as a cave. Krishna also entered while the demon was trying to kill his friends. Cowherds and cattle began to fell down unconsciously. Krishna immediately began to expand his body in bigger size within the throat of demon. Though the serpent was giant, but ultimately his throat began to choke and suffocate. His breathing stopped and eyes rolled down due to shortage of air, but Krishna continued expanding his body. Finally it burst out forming a hole in top part of demon skull. Aghasura fell dead and Krishna brought all his friends and cattle back to conscious stage.

Lord Krishna's encounter with Kaliya the demon serpent

Kaliya was a huge and poisonous snake who lived in Yamuna River. Earlier Kaliya was defeated and driven away from his home place “The Ramanaka Dwipa” by Garuda, the enemy of serpent community. Therefore, Kaliya shifted to Yamuna River with his family, knowing that it was the only safe area where him. Garuda could not attack because Garuda was under a curse not to visit Vrindavan else he would meet his death.

But due to kaliya, the water of Yamuna got poisoned and impure for drinking. All the trees and plantation near the river were seared. No birds or animals could go near the river, only one Kadamba tree grew unharmed near the bank of the river.

Once Krishna and his cowherd friends were playing with a ball, the ball fell into the river. As it was planned by Krishna, he jumped into the river in order to teach a lesson to Kaliya. Kaliya was alerted by Krishna sudden attack, he rose up his hundred and ten hood realizing poison out of his mouth in anger. Krishna was attack and surrounded by various poisonous serpents from all side. Kaliya coiled himself around Krishna’s body. Krishna shuddered all the serpents and began to expand his body in larger form in order to release himself from kaliya’s grip. As soon as kailya released Krishna, Krishna lowered Kaliya’s hood and climbed up putting his weight on the hood. Kaliya tried many a time to raise his hood but every time Krishna stamped down with his feet. Krishna began to dance on his hundred and ten hood, every time beating on his hood which kaliya tried raise. Kaliya’s hood started bleeding, he felt lifeless and unconscious. Seeing Kaliya’s defeat, Kaliya’s wives began to pray and begged mercy for him. Kaliya begged for his life and surrendered himself promising not to harm anybody. Krishna pardoned him and set him free on the condition that he with his family have to leave the Yamuna river and go back to his home place. Krishna also assures him with protection from Garuda. Therefore Krishna left his foot print on Kaliya’s hood, by seeing it Garuda could not harm Kaliya and his community anymore. The Yamuna River became purified and safe again.

Killing of Pralamba demon by krishna's elder brother Balaram

Pralamba was a demon sent by evil Kamsa to kill Lord Krishna and Lord Balarama. When he reached Vrindavan, he saw Krishna and Balaram were playing along with other cowherds of the village. He transformed himself into a cowherd and asked them to join him in their game. The cowherds were playing a special kind of game, called game of deer, which is a sort of a race. Two teams are formed and they are required to race up to finish point. According to the rules of game, the loser has to run back to the starting point carrying the winner on his shoulders. Pralamba knowingly lost the game and was forced to carry Balarama on his back. However, Pralamba then transformed himself into a larger form and tried to run off with Balarama still clinging to him. Balarama cried for help, but Krishna suggested him to use his own power and kill the demon. Balarama hammered the demon head very brutally with his formidable fists, ending the life of demon leaving back blooded mouth and head.

Keshi was a demon sent by evil Kansa in order to kill Lord Krishna. Following his master’s order, Keshi undertook the form of a ferocious horse. He could gallop at a staggering speed of thought, and his neighing frightened the people around. He started creating panic in the hometown of Lord Krishna. Alarmed by this, Lord Krishna challenged Keshi to an open duel. Roaring like a lion, Keshi charged towards Krishna striking him with his hooves. Krishna handled his two legs and threw him around to a great distance. Recovering from this fall, agitated Keshi charged again towards Lord Krishna, this time with his jaws open. Krishna handed a great blow with his left hand resulting in breaking of all of Keshi’s teeth. Krishna then started expanding his arm in his mouth, resulting in choking of Keshi. As Keshi fell lifeless to the ground, he assumed his true demonic form. 

Kansa had sent a series of demons to Gokula, where Krishna was staying with his foster-parents. Keshi is said to be the last demon sent by Kansa to kill Krishna. After Keshi's killing, Krishna and Balarama went to Mathura, where Kansa was killed by them.

Keshi-ghat is a major bathing ghat along the river Yamuna in Vrindavan, where Krishna is believed to have overpowered Keshi.

Krishna kills demon Bakasura

Bakasura was a demon and brother of Putana, sent to Gokul by Kansa in order to kill Krishna. Bakasura took the form of a huge bird, which looked like a giant crane. One day when Krishna with Balarama and his cowherd friends were resting on the bank of Yamuna River, they saw that beast bird. Bakasura suddenly attacked Krishna with his pointed sharp beaks and swallowed him up immediately. Balaraam and cowherd became unconscious and breathless, as if they had died of fear. Bakasura after swallowing up Krishna felt some unusual sensation and burning in his throat .Unease Bakasura finally vomit and threw Krishna out. Bakasura made second attempted to kill Krishna by hurting him with his beaks .Then Krishna caught hold the  beaks of the giant beast and split his mouth wide spread. Bakasura died on the spot. Once again Kansa failed in his evil effort to kill Krishna.

The story of Krishna and Putana

Putana was the first demon sent by cruel Kansa, the maternal uncle of Lord Krishna to kill him. Putana is also considered as a foster mother to Lord Krishna as she fed him through her breast, though with the intension to kill him by poisoned milk. Putana dressed herself into young, beautiful women before entering to Gokula with a lotus in her hand. The innocent cowherds were misguided by her immense beauty and mistook her as a goddess of luck "LAKSHMI". As a result people could not see her evil intension and therefore she easily entered Nanda Maharaja’s House. Amazed with her appearance and motherly affection towards baby Krishna, Yashoda allowed Putana to take the baby into her lap. Baby Krishna was lying on a bed and when Putana approached him, lord yawn n saw her whole universe in his mouth. Putana instantly recognize the supreme personality and right away she began to feed the baby with poisoned breast smeared with manadana, an intoxicant. Baby Krishna sucked the poisoned milk along with her life. Putana screamed in pain and ran out of the house, pleading for her release. But to stop her from further evil activities, he immediately kills her. Putana fell down life less, turning to her demonic form which extended up to 12 miles with opened mouth and spread arms and legs. Putana got liberation and freedom from all sins by breast feeding to baby Krishna. By offering her milk, Putana had performed "the supreme act of motherhood" in the shade of her wicked motives and got the same heaven that Yashoda acquired.

Balaram killing dhenukasura

Once, Lord Balarama and Lord Krishna along with their cowherd friends heard about the grove of tala tree (now known as palm tree). All of them decided to go there in order to have delicious and juicy fruits. Cowherds were scared of going there as the grove was guarded by a demon in form of a donkey. His name was Dhenuka, who lived there and survived on deer meat. So cowherds asked Balarama and Krishna for help. Balaram started shaking the tree and as a result some fruits fell down on earth, which alerted Dhenuka. The demon attacked and kicked Balarama on his chest with its hind legs while he was collecting fruits from the ground. Balarama in return caught hold the legs and twisted the donkey round and round and tossed him against the palm tree. Dhenuka lost his life with this attack and fell dead. After that Krishna and Balaram went on to slay other demon friends of Dhenuka. Once again the grove became safe for cowherds and their cattle.

Dhenuka was killed by Lord Balarama not by Lord Krishna for two reasons. Firstly only Balarama could set free dhenuka from curse of the sage Durvasa and secondly Lord Krishna had promised to Prahlad maharaj not to kill anybody from his dynasty.

The story of Krishna and Arishta, the demon bull

Arishta was a demon disguised as giant bull, send by kansa. His appearience was as dark as smoke along with very sharp and piercing horns. Arishta was very strong and huge. He could tore the earth with his powerful hooves. Alarmed with his terrorism, everyone in gokul were scared and felt insecured. But krishna clapped his hands in order to challenge the Arishtasura. Arishta got charged and attacked krishna with his pointed horns. Krishna immedietly held his horn with his tight grip in order to stop him and hit him with his thigh. Krishna finally broke one of the horn of Arishta and attacked him with same horn. The attack ended the life of demon and Arishta fell down dead.

But people of gokul blame krishna for killing an animal which was sin according to Hindu mythology. Even Radha with her friends kept distance from Lord krishna.
