Udupi Shri Krishna Matha - Karnataka

Udupi Shri Krishna Matha is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna located in the town of Udupi in Karnataka, India. The Matha means the area resembling a holy place for daily devotion and living. This Krishna Matha was founded by the Vaishnava saint Shri Madhwacharya in the 13th century.

As legend, once there was a storm in the sea at Malpe. At the same time Shri Madhwacharya present on the shore saw a ship which was in trouble. He helped the ship to reach the shore safely. The sailors were very thankful to him and as an appreciation gave him deities of Lord Krishna and Lord Balarama. He installed the deity of Lord Balarama near Malpe and now this temple is known as Vadapandeshwara. He brought the deity of Lord Krishna and installed at Udupi, which is known as the present day famous Krishna Matha. Surrounding the Sri Krishna Matha are several temples known as the Udupi Anantheshwara Temple which is supposed to be over a 1,000 years old.

The deities of this temple along with lord Krishna deity are facing western side. There is one more story about this temple. Kanakadasa was a very spiritual worshipper and devotee of Lord Krishna. Once he was stayed in front of Krishna Matha during a makeshift hermitage. There was an earthquake in the night and the outer temple wall cracked such a way that there was a wide enough opening for Kanakadasa to get the glimpse of the idol. Later on that part was decorated and named after him, Kanakanakhindi. Till today devotees offers their prayers through the same window and seek blessing from Lord.

Change Is The Law Of The Universe- Krishna

These beautiful lines are from Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta, a devotional teaching of Lord Krishna to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshestra during the war of Mahabharata. The essence from Geeta is said to have global relevance.

The English translation of these lines:
Whatever happened, happened for the good
whatever is happening, is happening for the good
whatever will happen, will also happen for the good only.
What did you lose that you are lamenting about?
What did you bring with you that you have lost?
What did you produce (gave birth to) that got destroyed?
Whatever you have, you received from here

Meera temple of Chittorgarh

Kumbha Shyam Temple or Meera temple of Chittorgarh is dedicated to a mystic poetess and a great devotee of Lord Krishna – Meera Bai. This temple has very attractive deity of Lord Krishna along with the statue of Meera Bai in right side.

Meera Bai was the daughter Ratan Singh Rathore born in Kurki village near Merta. Later on she was married to Bhojraj, son of Maharana Sangram Singh I of Chittorgarh. Raja Bhoj Died soon and Meera Bai continued her devotion for Lord Krishna. On request of Meera Bai this temple was built by her Father-in-law, Maharana Sangram Singh. In this temple only Meera Bai started spending her time by praying and singing Bhajans in Glory of Lord Krishna.

When Rana Vikramaditya the step brother of Raja Bhoj became the king of chittorgarh, he didn’t like the devotional attitude of Meera for Lord Krishna. He tried to kill her by sending her a bowl full of poison on the name of Charnamrit (The holy water ). Meera offered her prayers to Lord and happily drunk poison. It was surely her great devotion that the poison turned to nectar. This incident with many other great stories happened in this temple make this temple a unique one.

The ceiling of the cenotaph have beautifully carved figure of five human bodied with one head. The figure conveys the message of equality that all castes are equal and have right to attain God equally.

Krishna-Meera's Devotional Love

MeeraBai was a great devotee of Lord Krishna and had her unconditional love for him. We had heard lot of stories about MeeraBai; still we have one inspired story to tell.

Meerabai once was standing on the banks of Yamuna River busy in singing bhajan in glory of Lord Krishna. Same time some Hindu saint passing by recognized Meerabai. Knowing her great devotion, they went to Meera and said that they came from Dwaraka. They said that the doors of the Dwarka temple are closed for some time now and we are of the mutual belief that only a person of your stature can get the doors open. Meera agreed to come as she didn’t wanted to refuse saints and also wanted everyone to have darshan of Srinathji-the presiding deity of Dwaraka.

Along with priest Meera went Dwaraka and offered her prayers to Srinathji-the presiding deity of and sang devotional bhajans. In her words she said to Lord that in this whole world she only know and believe him as everything like father, mother, husband and guru. Meera said you are only the protector in this whole world as I suffered a lot of trials and tribulations here.

Suddenly the doors opened and MeeraBai immediately ran into the temple and embraced her Lord and with a flash of bright light she became one with the lord and her form vanished.

Lord Krishna as Charioteer of Arjuna

This beautiful image depicts the story why Lord Krishna acted as Arjuna’s charioteer.  Knowing the fact that this position of Lord Krishna did not require the wielding of weapons but his decision to drive the chariot was one of devotion and love for his best friend. Lord Krishna knew that Arjun was on the right path of religion but at some point hesitate in killing his own brothers. So he chose this position to give him the divine guidance. And more on that Lord Krishna promised to Kaurav's that he would not raise weapon in battle of Mahabharata.
