Udupi Shri Krishna Matha - Karnataka

Udupi Shri Krishna Matha is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Krishna located in the town of Udupi in Karnataka, India. The Matha means the area resembling a holy place for daily devotion and living. This Krishna Matha was founded by the Vaishnava saint Shri Madhwacharya in the 13th century.

As legend, once there was a storm in the sea at Malpe. At the same time Shri Madhwacharya present on the shore saw a ship which was in trouble. He helped the ship to reach the shore safely. The sailors were very thankful to him and as an appreciation gave him deities of Lord Krishna and Lord Balarama. He installed the deity of Lord Balarama near Malpe and now this temple is known as Vadapandeshwara. He brought the deity of Lord Krishna and installed at Udupi, which is known as the present day famous Krishna Matha. Surrounding the Sri Krishna Matha are several temples known as the Udupi Anantheshwara Temple which is supposed to be over a 1,000 years old.

The deities of this temple along with lord Krishna deity are facing western side. There is one more story about this temple. Kanakadasa was a very spiritual worshipper and devotee of Lord Krishna. Once he was stayed in front of Krishna Matha during a makeshift hermitage. There was an earthquake in the night and the outer temple wall cracked such a way that there was a wide enough opening for Kanakadasa to get the glimpse of the idol. Later on that part was decorated and named after him, Kanakanakhindi. Till today devotees offers their prayers through the same window and seek blessing from Lord.
