The sacred Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple of Mathura

Mathura, The Birth City of Lord Krishna, is one of the most sacred destinations of India and is situated on the banks of river Yamuna. A vast temple complex where Lord is said to have been born thousands of years ago is situated in the heart of Mathura city. The complex contains many smaller temples and amongst them is the prison cell. Popularly known as 'Garbha Graha', this prison cell is the exact place where Lord Krishna was born in order to save the universe from all evils. Many statues and sculptures of the bygone era were found on excavating this site. The stone walled cell is evocative of the cruelty of King Kansa.

The temple had been destroyed number of times in the ages of Mohammed Ghazni, Sikander Lodi and Aurangzeb but has been restored every time. The prison cell has now gradually turned into the present beautiful temple.

Millions of devotees throng this temple during the auspicious day of Janmashtami, the birth date of Lord Krishna. Celebrations start from mid night onwards as the Lord was born on exact 12:00 am. The festivities and celebrations during the festival are famous all over India. You have to be patient and wait in a long queue before entering into the narrow prison cell.
