Kaliya was a huge and poisonous snake who lived in Yamuna River. Earlier Kaliya was defeated and driven away from his home place “The Ramanaka Dwipa” by Garuda, the enemy of serpent community. Therefore, Kaliya shifted to Yamuna River with his family, knowing that it was the only safe area where him. Garuda could not attack because Garuda was under a curse not to visit Vrindavan else he would meet his death.
But due to kaliya, the water of Yamuna got poisoned and impure for drinking. All the trees and plantation near the river were seared. No birds or animals could go near the river, only one Kadamba tree grew unharmed near the bank of the river.
Once Krishna and his cowherd friends were playing with a ball, the ball fell into the river. As it was planned by Krishna, he jumped into the river in order to teach a lesson to Kaliya. Kaliya was alerted by Krishna sudden attack, he rose up his hundred and ten hood realizing poison out of his mouth in anger. Krishna was attack and surrounded by various poisonous serpents from all side. Kaliya coiled himself around Krishna’s body. Krishna shuddered all the serpents and began to expand his body in larger form in order to release himself from kaliya’s grip. As soon as kailya released Krishna, Krishna lowered Kaliya’s hood and climbed up putting his weight on the hood. Kaliya tried many a time to raise his hood but every time Krishna stamped down with his feet. Krishna began to dance on his hundred and ten hood, every time beating on his hood which kaliya tried raise. Kaliya’s hood started bleeding, he felt lifeless and unconscious. Seeing Kaliya’s defeat, Kaliya’s wives began to pray and begged mercy for him. Kaliya begged for his life and surrendered himself promising not to harm anybody. Krishna pardoned him and set him free on the condition that he with his family have to leave the Yamuna river and go back to his home place. Krishna also assures him with protection from Garuda. Therefore Krishna left his foot print on Kaliya’s hood, by seeing it Garuda could not harm Kaliya and his community anymore. The Yamuna River became purified and safe again.
